
Liang Po Po is a Winner
LIANG PO PO - THE MOVIE has broken all
sneak box-office records for Singapore movies over the weekend
and surpassed sneak takings for many Hollywood blockbusters
as well.
The film grossed a $183,885
on 30 screens in its sneak screenings from Friday to Sunday,
says distributor United International Pictures.
Other
movies showing during the same period are The Corrupter, starring
Chow Yun Fat, which took in $96,000, and The Siege, starring
Denzel Washington, which made $83,613.
By comparison, the romantic comedy You've Got
Mail, starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, grossed $131,263 during
its sneak weekend a fortnight ago. And Hollywood blockbusters
Jurassic 15ark made $171,430 and Prince Of Egypt $147,392 in
their respective sneaks.
The
previous record for a sneak preview for a Singapore film was
$97,526 for Army Daze in 1996.
"We
are simply ecstatic," said UIP's managing director Roger Pollock
of Liang Po Po. "It is now quite evident that Singaporeans want
and appreciate good-quality film entertainment, whether it be
local or foreign."
The
movie, produced by Raintree Pictures, is naive 85-year-old in
search of a new life.
It opens on Friday.
