THE TRUTH ABOUT JANE & SAM FULFILLS PROMISE

Raintree Pictures' second movie, THE TRUTH ABOUT JANE & SAM, is the company's first collaboration with an experienced regional partner.

The movie, released in Singapore on 8 July, has grossed S$984,685 as of 28 July 1999 and is sure to cross the one million mark this weekend. This is very good box office for a love drama. The results are comparable to Hollywood movies of the same love genre; SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE grossed S$817,070, FORCES OF NATURE (released a week before THE TRUTH ABOUT JANE & SAM) grossed about S$633,000 while NOTTING HILL has grossed about S$1,330,000. Chinese love dramas released in the past year have faired poorly below S$400,000. CITY OF GLASS starring Leon Lai and Shuqi grossed about S$303,000, LOVE GENERATION starring Leon Lai, Shuqi and Carina Lau grossed S$91,000 and PRINCE CHARMING starring Andy Lau and Michelle Reis grossed S$345,000.

The movie has just been launched in Hong Kong and it will be released in Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea and other regional markets in the very near future.

Daniel Yun comments, "We are very pleased with the results of our second movie. It's our first collaboration with a regional partner and it is paying off. Singapore is too small a market. Working with partners from established markets from the East and West can ensure a greater distribution of our movies, allowing for bigger budgets and more room for experimentation.

"We will be announcing more projects in the next half of the year, some in English and some in Chinese to fulfil our goal of 6 to 8 movies by Year 2000. "

For a start at the festival circuit, the movie will be submitted to the Pusan Film Festival in Korea in October this year. After director Derek Yee's critically acclaimed VIVA EROTICA starring Leslie Cheung and Shuqi in 1996 (it was a final selection at the Berlin Film Festival), his latest work is much anticipated by the festival programmers.

"This is great exposure for Raintree Pictures. As a new movie company in a budding industry in Singapore, participation in key festivals will not only help raise the profile of the company but also help to promote the Singapore industry." Yun adds.

Raintree Pictures is a joint venture movie company set up on 1 Aug 1998 between Television Corporation of Singapore and Temasek Holdings, one of the main investment arms of the Singapore government.

Released on 29 July 1999
