RE: The Straits Times, Life! Section, 6 July 1999 - 'FANN STICKS TO HER GUNS'
by Lynn Seah

At TCS and Raintree Pictures, an artiste's personal life has never been used for the promotion and publicity of a TV programme, album or movie. Often it is the pursuit of headline-grabbing stories that leads some journalists to uncover the details of an artiste's private life.

There is a need to clarify this in relation to the promotion and marketing of The Truth About Jane & Sam. It is not prudent nor is it in our favour to distract the campaign we have carefully planned out with reports on Fann Wong's personal life.

The strategy of the campaign for the movie focuses on 'Who is Peter Ho?' and 'The Truth About Fann'. For Fann, this angle ties in with the title of the movie. The use of the word 'TRUTH' has caused the media to speculate beyond what Raintree Pictures had intended.

The truth of the matter is that an exclusive interview with Life! was arranged in May and that the article was subsequently dropped. Fann herself had offered to touch on the subject of her reported boyfriend but during the interview she clarified that it was not to give more details but to put this aspect of her life in perspective. When she retracted from revealing the details, the editor of Life! felt there was nothing new and killed the story. It is precisely this reticence that has caused the press to regard Fann as evasive.

During a recent luncheon with the Chinese press, the journalists expressed the same sentiments about Fann. They were also irked by Fann's alleged inconsistent approach to the local and foreign press. They felt that Fann has taken the local Chinese press for granted. It is with the intention to clarify that a 'TRUTH' press conference was arranged by United International Pictures. On the eve of the press conference, Fann requested not to go ahead with it because she felt the objectives of the press conference cannot be met with the prevailing focus of the media on her personal life.

At TCS and Raintree Pictures, we respected her concerns. As it has gone beyond the promotion of the movie and Fann as an artiste, we jointly decided to cancel the press conference.
