"Fann Wong tells all
about that special man in her life."
This could have been
the blurb on the front page of Life! today. But it was not
to be.
Last Friday, United
International Pictures (UIP), distributor of her upcoming
movie, The Truth About Jane & Sam, issued a statement inviting
reporters to a press conference at 2.45pm yesterday.
It was tantalisingly
worded: "The press conference where Fann Wong will reveal
the TRUTH about some of the issues the media has been speculating
about."
And clearly, one of
the issues the media has been speculating about is the man
in her life, whom she had reportedly broken up with recently.
Then at 10.15am yesterday,
UIP called to say the event was cancelled, but referred Life!
to Raintree Pictures, a co-producer of Fann's movie, when
asked the reason for cancellation.
This was not the first
time that the people behind the movie have been seemingly
getting the actress to go public about intimate details of
her life, no doubt in a bid to whip up publicity for the film.
In May, Raintree promised
that Fann, 28, would reveal who her ex-boyfriend was in an
exclusive interview with Life!.
She did the interview
but refused to say anything about the man except that he was
a "special friend" of 11 years.
As there was nothing
new to report, Life! said it did not want to run a story.
That same day, Raintree called the section and promised that
she would return to tell all. She never did and the story
was dropped.
The New Paper had also
been promised an interview, by the Television Corporation
of Singapore, in which Fann was supposed to open up.
But she was as evasive
as ever. In a TNP report on May 15, she was quoted as saying:
"I really have no boyfriend then, so what do you expect me
to say? All these years, I've never talked about my private
life and I don't intend to change that."
A Raintree spokesman
said that yesterday's cancellation was all due to a misunderstanding.
The press conference
had been arranged following a lunch with Chinese newspaper
reporters, and was meant to "clear the air about Fann, who
has been a little reserved with the press".
But the company later
realised that the media had misunderstood the intention of
the press conference, which it claimed was not to be about
her private life. Raintree said it wanted to separate the
movie from "Fann and her past" since she was only one element
of the film.
Moreover, Fann was exhausted
from promotions for the movie, the soundtrack for the movie,
her album and her new television series, so the company thought
it best to cancel the event.
Life! was not the only
media to misunderstand the intention of the press conference.
TCS 5's Showbuzz has been running trailers in anticipation
of the "tell all" session. Raintree said yesterday afternoon
that Showbuzz would no longer be running the trailer.
Attempts to find out
more from those close to Fann drew a blank. Her mother, Madam
Wong Siew Toy, said "I don't know" to everything, even when
asked by Life! if the actress was even in Singapore at the
moment.
Fann, it would appear, is
winning the battle to keep her private life private.
