NEVER MIND CRITICS, GO WATCH FANN
I am not a fan of Fann
Wong, so when I was invited to the gala premiere of The Truth
About Jane & Sam, I didn't expect to be thrilled.
However, at the end of
the movie, I had to admit that I like the movie a lot. And I
enjoyed myself. At poignant moments, I was actually moved to
tears.
When I read your review
(Life!, June 26) I was very surprised at the harsh stand your
reviewer Teo Pau Lin took.
Honestly, I have seen
less worthy films provided with better comments by your team
of reviewers.
Is it possible that Ms
Teo is not a fan of Fann as well?
Throughout the movie I
was very encouraged by the fresh approach the producers of this
movie have taken.
This
is not another local slapstick comedy nor another art-house
film. Instead, it is a heartwarming love story that is not afraid
to be life-affirming nor does it shy away from revisiting love
stories involving in-laws and differences in social standing.
Yet, the treatment is
updated with a contemporary twist.
The script is well-written
and the two main characters are well-developed in the first
half of the film.
Both Fann and Peter Ho
put in credible performances while the foreign director added
a new feel and texture to local movies.
Ms Teo maintains that
movie-goers are smarter with their seven dollars than to spend
it on blink-and-you-miss superstar cameos.
This movie is much more
than her flippant summary. Singaporeans must watch it to see
how mistaken she is.
As well, her review only
serves to prejudice film-goers to thwart a budding local movie
industry.
