I was quite sceptical,
as much hype had been thrown up to support this second movie
from Raintree Pictures.
I am not writing a critical
review of the movie but would like to express my views on
how a Singaporean perceives this movie.
I was really impressed
and happy after watching the show.
Credit should be given
to scriptwriter Derek Yee for creating an inspiring and watchable
movie.
His
wise choice of cast, with Fann Wong (as Jane) and Peter Ho
(as Sam), contributed to its success.
Wong plays a young delinquent
girl who survives in the city by conning, sweet-talking, shoplifting
and moving around with the right connections.
She smokes, drinks,
takes drugs and spews profanities.
Her portrayal of a petulant
Jane is excellent and very natural. It is a breakthrough for
Fann as she is playing a role other than a good girl. She
acted her role well beyond expectations.
Ho is a rookie actor.
Yee's selection of the innocent, young, simple man fitted
the role of Sam well. Although a newcomer, Ho's acting is
natural.
The plot is filled
with the ups and downs of life, the fun times, love and light-hearted
dialogue that brought laughter from the audience.
At the end of the show,
I wondered whether Raintree had given the scriptwriter a brief
on how he should end his story.
Besides the absorbing
storyline, the theme song and the background music are lively.
This movie has reached a satisfactory standard comparable
to any regional movie.
